It can have caffeine, that won't bother the fish at all. other than that, just use a cheap, unflavored tea. It's interesting you would ask, a few months I assigned this to a student as a research project (thanks to a member here, FWadmin, for the idea). We found that the tea apparently had no ill effects on a variety of tropical fish tested, the pH lowering ability was about equal to peat moss and almond leaf (by weight) and could find no harmful effects at all. Far cheaper than almond leaf for pH adjustment as well. Now, some breeders place almond leaves in the tank for the bettas to make a bubble nest under, obviously tea will not replace the leaves in that regard, but a styrofoam cup cut in half will

Ask this question only once.

Magicman already answered you question a long with betta chris

"Different tannins, but tea will in fact have a similar pH lowering effect on the water. Be very sure to use pure tea, no flavorings etc.
