Lightening is nature lashing out physically to protect itself while thunder is it's howl of pain.

Or it's God lighting his farts.

I'm not sure.

I'm not sure this question can be answered in "metaphorical" terms. Lightning is an electrical discharge usually travelling from the negatively charged ground upwards to positively charged clouds (yes, upwards). The electrical arc, which only lasts for a fraction of a second is hotter than the surface of the sun. As the air around it is super-heated and expands at an explosive rate, thunder results. The reason you see the lightning before you hear the thunder is because light travels at roughly 186,000 miles per second and sound travels through air at about 769 miles per hour. I hope this helps (metaphorically speaking).

The other day I was traveling home in a beautiful show, the lightning was in the clouds, not reaching the ground. there was just enough sunlight to see a mixture of color with each flash, & each bolt was clearly defined.I remember thinking this was natures fireworks display, & much more beautiful than man could ever produce.

A flash of lightning frames the source of knowledge, a seering if sudden and rude wakefulness; and thunder -- spirit, experiencing and feeling, ay, life itself.

Lightening is electricity ripping through the air.
Thunder is the "sonic" result of such activity.
Thunder is the sound of the explosion resulting from the lightening- that is why you can count the moments between the explosions and figure out how close the lightening strikes are.

Yang and yin? :))) Lightning is obviously electric, thus masculine, yang; and the thunder, being more "mysterious" and hidden could be the magnetic, feminine, yin.
