If you don't know anyone who knows a good attorney I would tell you to go through your local bar association or if you can't afford an attorney call your local legal aid office.

The yellow pages of your phone book. Most attorneys list their special area whether it be small claims, injury ,divorce etc. Some offer free consultation for the first visit. I believe all layers have a degree in law and can help you but some only practice certain types of law and are more familiar with case specifics of that area.

Contact the state bar association and ask for an attorney who specialized in your problem. They can suggest one or more, who will be local to you.

crimminal or civil? if its crimminal you can check out open cases, never go with court appointed if you can afford to pay for a private atty. Civilly, like divorce, you could ck with a p.i. and see they would recommend. p.i.'s have info on great divorce attys.
