How to sleep with a clear conscience at night when they know they just sold something to someone that they didn't need, or couldn't afford.
/sarcasm of salesmen, sorry.

As a career salesperson I read all the answers and was mystified.
Sales is the start of everything. You would not have a job if someone didn't sell, wether it is the order you are making, the service you are providing. It all started with a sale to someone from someone.
The old days of plaid pants and white shoes salespeople are long gone. People for the most part are well versed in the products, and services they want to purchase, and know about what to expect to pay.
As a salesperson my job is to educate a prospective customer on the benefits of my "product"and company. Answer questions and generally make the customer feel confident in thier choices.
As a customer your expected to ask questions if you don't understand or stop the sale if you don't want to buy it. If you bought something you couldn't afford than it is your own fault. If you bought something you didn't like than you didn't take the time to decide wether it would be what you wanted.
Now for the truth of sales:
20% of the salespeople sell 80% of the business. This is true in any industry and any type of sales. You are either very good or not good enough to make a living doing it.
How to be good?
Odds. The more people you talk to the more you will sell.
Talk to 10 people and you will sell a maximum of 10 people.
Talk to 100 people and you will sell a maximum of 100 people. ect..........
Now take your schedule and find the quickest way to see the most people. And do it everyday, day in and day out. Someone today will say yes. They key is that you be the one they say it to.
Good luck!!!!

Hmmmmm. Good question. I'm not a salesperson. If I were, it would be valuable to be to interpret presence. It includes ambulation, attire, eye movement, and an attitude of control. Control is the most important attitude observed. So, learning to read these displays accurately will result in your being a superb salesperson.

Salespeople need to learn to accept rejection, or loss of a sale, and keep on going with a positive, can-do attitude. They also need to remember not take stuff personally -it is a job, and nothing more. Last of all, they need to be able to put themselves in the customer's shoes, so they can tailor their pitch to the true wants and needs of the customer.

Well, seeing as how part of my job is to be a sales person(just part of the job, not my job code). You need to know how to speak to people, you need to know what you're talking about, don't oversell something and remember that the customer is not always right but let them think so so you can get your money.
