I don't think it hurts your eyesight but be careful anyway. I watched a seemingly never-ending lightning storm in Desoto, MO. At least six hours. The next day I had a splitting headache all day. My vision was okay but the headache was very unusual because I hardly ever get headaches.

I don't really see how you could stare at lightning because the flash is so quick that you eye cannot react to the stepped leader. The return stroke (the part you see) lasts like msec and even with multiple strikes you aren't going to hurt your eyes. Unless you were hit by the stroke and you were close enough to have the rods saturated (like when someone takes a picture of you and you see a flash and it causes your vision to white-out).

Aaaahhhh I love watching the lightning streak through the sky--especially with a dark sky. I can watch it and stare at it for hours--if it was there that long. No, I have not gone blind. Enjoy it all you want.

Ok, well, first, how do you stare at lightening? It don't stay, it lasts a split second and you don't know where it's gonna strike, so no you're not gonna go blind because there's been plenty of times I've looked right at a lightening strike.

Only if it's you eyes being hiten by that lightning.

Of course that light is strong, but it last so briefly, so it has not enough time to turn you into a blind person.
