It would depend on the age of the child, but if you buy Dover Evergreen Editions of classic children's books, you can probably get two or even three. They are not the little kid just learning to read books, but things like Tom Sawyer. They also publish some old-time children's books for smaller children, such as "A Child's Garden of Verses" by Robert Lewis Stevenson.

I would go to a discount store, or half.com where you can get a few for 5 dollars. I would get something my children are interested in.

"Pet Show" by Ezra Jack Keats. I've always loved his children's books, particularly this one because it has a great story about kids and their pets (conventional and unique) and the pictures are vibrant and realistic.

I would buy "Love you Forever" by Robert Munsch. It lets my son know the most important thing of all. That no matter what happens I will always love him, FOREVER.
