People at my work always use a comma after thanks. I don't think there should be a comma there. If you are thanking someone I think it should just be "thanks bill" with no comma. My sister and boyfriend agree with me. WHICH IS IT???

I also think you should only put a comma if you're saying
Thanks,
Bill
And you are Bill.

Leave out the comma otherwise it might look as if it's signed by someone called Bill.

In order for that to be true, you would have to be Bill. Seeing as how you're a girl, I'm guessing you're not Bill (unless it's a shortened version of Billina. Lol) Otherwise, the comma should be omited.

If you want to write properly and you are addressing someone, you must use the comma.
Get lost, Bill!
Come here, Bill.
Thanks, Bill.
That's the rule.
If you say "Thanks Bill" it looks, frankly, as if "Thanks" is an adjective for Bill or as if you left the subject out of the sentence: "James thanks Bill."
The rule is, if addressing someone, comma.
If the closing of a letter and Bill is doing the thanking, then the closing and the name should be on separate lines, just as with any other letter:
Thanks,
Bill

If you are thanking someone in a letter, you use the comma. "Thanks, Bill, for all the hard work you've done on this project." No comma would sound better in this sentence, for example: "Julia thanks Bill each day for the love he gives."

it depends if you're thanking Bill or if you're thanking the person you're writing to and your name is Bill.
Thanking Bill would be: Thanks Bill
Thanking the person on the other side of the letter: Thanks, Bill

Unless YOU'RE Bill, and YOU'RE the one doing the thanking, then it would be:
Thanks,
Bill.
But if YOU'RE thanking Bill, then it is:
Thanks Bill!
