I learned of this in my 2nd year algebra...

12 = 2 x 2 x 3
21 = 3 x 7

So the LCM is 2 X 2 X 3 X 7 = 84 - we picked 3 only once because it's common to 12 and 21 all the other values aren't and so must be "part" of the LCM!

Hope this helps!

Multiple Of 21

For everyone answering 3... that is the greatest common FACTOR. Factors are numbers that are multiplied together to get a product (as in 3 x 4 = 12). A multiple means a number that can be divided by another number. 48 is divisible by 12, so it is a multiple of 12. But 48 is not divisible by 21, so it is not a multiple. The least common multiple is 84 because 84 is divisible by 12 and 21!

Multiples of 12: 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, 84, 96, ...

Multiples of 21: 21, 42, 63, 84, ...,

From the list, the first (least) common multiple is: 84.

Artless and Jam are correct.

The lowest common multiple (called the Least Common Multiple) of two numbers is the smallest possible number that is a multiple of both. In this case 84.

If one of the numbers is zero, then the LCM = 0.

In fractions, the term used is Lowest Common Denominator. In the example 1/2 + 1/4 = 2/4 + 1/4 = 3/4 where 4 is called the LCD.

Most persons here are confusing LCM with Greatest Common Divisor (also called greatest common factor or highest common factor). This would be the largest positive number that divides both non-zero numbers without a remainder. In your example as 3.

Thus in fractions the Greatest Common Divisor in the example 42/56 = (3 x 14)/(4 x 14) = 3/4 where 14 is the GCD.

To find the lowest common multiple (LCM) of two or more numbers, list the multiples of the larger number and stop when you find a multiple of the other number. This is the LCM.

For 12, it's 12,24,36,48,60,72,84,96
For 21, it's 21,42,63,84,105.

The lowest common multiple for 21 and 12 is 84.

Everyone is saying 3! 3 is the GCD (Greatest Common Divisor) of 12 & 21.

The lowest common multiple, or LCD, is 84. X is a multiple of Y if there exists an integer k such that X = kY. The LCD of two numbers, say a and b, is the least integer that is both a multiple of a and a multiple of b. The multiples of 12 up to 84 are:

12 24 36 48 60 72 84...

The multiples of 21 up to 84 are:

21 42 63 84

Therefore the least common multiple is 84.
