Wall clouds are what many tornadoes, especially the strongest ones, will spawn from. They are a lowering of the cloud base in the vicinity of the rotating updraft, or mesocyclone.

Tornadoes USUALLY are spawned by supercell thunderstorms, which from a distance will just be very tall and ominous looking storm clouds. Closer up, MOST tornadoes will come from a wall cloud. This will look like a rotating lowering in the clouds. Not all supercells and wall clouds spawn tornadoes, but many do.
