It is likely the U.S. will decline economically first, then Militarily.

But when? Maybe a few generations or so. Maybe sooner, its starting to show signs of rapid decline. But probably not in our lifetime.

Who next? Everyone thinks it would be China and Its not a bad guess, however let me throw a few more out there for fun. How about Northern Africa? Yes it sounds very strange but many multi-national corporations are moving there and it has a lot of untapped resources.......yes, alright, it does sound far fetched. How about United Arab Emirates? same thing and a who lot of money there. Yea that one too sounds far off. OK I stick with China for now.

Technically, the USA isn't an empire. It's a federal constitutional republic. It flirted with empire at the turn of the prior century, after a war with Spain in which it captured some of that failing empire's overseas possessions, but it didn't last long.

The collapse of America's society and civilization is probably 'imminent' - if you consider "possibly within your lifetime" to be 'imminent.' It's hard to say when the end will come - usually it's farther away than you fear, but sooner than you expect - or what form it will take (slow decline, sudden collapse, balkanization, conquest from without, etc).

Candidates for taking over the 'superpower' title and lording it over whatever remains might include China (methodical, long-term manuevering in that direction) and the Muslim Caliphate (sure it doesn't exist yet, but it's been beating up a superpower pretty successfully for something that doesn't exist). Longshots might be India or Brazil a union of Western Hemisphere states along the EU model. The EU itself, and Russia are really out of the running, they are declining much as the US is.

Initially, a tri-polar world where the EU and China expands influence, countering American dominance in African and Asian affairs.

Probably not long after that, I could see Russia expanding its influence again and the Middle East acting as a unified empire again. The five polar political map seems like it would be stable for a while.

I don't really see anything that would stop America from being a major player in global politics and the international economy - it will just be that other super-nations emulate the model of state unification under a military/economic federation and come to be more equal partners.

In almost any scenario short of all-out atomic war, America remains the dominant power in the Western Hemisphere.

"All the armies of Europe, Asia and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth in their military chest; with a Buonaparte for a commander, could not by force, take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in a trial of a thousand years.....

At what point, then, is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide."

There will always be a worlds superpower, it’s human nature. I would rather it be the nation in which I reside rather than someplace much worse such as the Soviet Union (yeah we can call it that again).

The USA is a good place to live and does a lot of good around the world. Is it perfect? No. Will it ever be? Not under any circumstances. Will there ever be a perfect nation? No.

Never, simply because there is no empire, but if you mean the United States in general? Never, because we are conglomerate nation, made up of the world. As the world changes, so will we, adapting, growing, getting the best the world has to offer in the way of the millions of immigrants who still come here.

That makes why and who (?) irrelevant.

Well I never really considered it an empire but don't expect anything for at least a several generations.
