After nearly 50 years of electric and acoustic guitar playing, I will tell you that every time you play, you are learning. Whether you learn from a book, the T.V., video's, DVD's, or CD's, you are being taught. You are learning. What I am saying is take any and all help you can get, but don't be afraid to go it alone some also. The trip into the unknown is what music is all about. Enjoy yourself!

I taught myself a lot of the basic chords and stuff by using beginner guitar books. Later, I got to the point where I needed help, and I started taking guitar lessons. My guitar teacher has really helped me improve! I would suggest trying to teach yourself as much as possible, or until you get stuck, and then look into getting outside help! Best of luck with whatever you choose, you'll love guitar!

It depends on how good you want to be. However this is 21st century, so it's quite easy to learn that kind of stuff sitting at your computer. There are lots of learning kits online, one of the best i have found is http://guitarlessononline.blogspot.com/ . High quality videos makes it easy to learn even for a 10 year old! Check it out ;-)

Best of luck!

I think the answer should rely on your current ability. Therefore, I have one question for you. Do you play the guitar?

Only if you actually plan to play a guitar. Otherwise, why bother?

What do you mean by "is it ok to not"?? Do you mean is it ok to teach yourself? Because that should be perfectly fine. Try How To... books, etc. So yeah, hope I helped..
