I recently bought and installed a new DVD-RW drive, Pioneer DVR-112D. It's the only drive plugged into my secondary IDE channel and it's set to master. The computer recognizes it, its name is listed in device manager and everything... but it cannot read or write CDs and DVDs. For example, when i try to play an audio CD in windows media player, the tracklist comes up with the songnames and evertying in the playlist window, but then it says "Windows Media Player cannot read the CD. The disc might be dirty or damaged or the CD drive might be malfunctioning." When I try to burn a CD using Nero, it says "Burn process failed" and the blank CD is then ruined. I've tried firmware update, but it does not help.

I also recently bought and returned a Sony DRU-820A burner and ran into similar problems, which probably means the problem is not the drives but my computer.

Do you think a BIOS upgrade may solve the problem?

i tried all of the suggestions below. None worked. Maybe the drive is malfunctioning... What are the chances of buying 2 faulty drives in a row eh?

Did you update the drivers?

Audio cable doesn't have anything to do with burning CD or DVD so you do not need one. First try changing IDE cable and then set the DVD drive on primary IDE cable as SLAVE.
Second, depending on your computer configuration you might need the BIOS update but I really don't think that's the problem. Sometimes different software conflicts can produce that kind of behavior. For exe. : DVD-CD Creator usually can not work with any NERO on the same system. It works, but there is 90% possibility of ruining the discs while burning. The other thing, try some other players, WMP is c..p.

OK so you have your First IDE for your HD and you have a Second IDE as your Burner or is it IDE/Burner on the same Cable ??Anyway here is what i would do , first I would make sure that there's not a driver just for that burner , next I would try to burn at slower speeds like 8x,4x , I would also see if I could play other Cd's,DVD's Ect....If all that fails then I would clean the lens itself or buy a commercial cleaner to clean the lens, be careful not to use harsh cleaners like a Window cleaner or something ,just huffs of hot air or some Alcohol , make sure it's very dry when done and clear as can be ...ohhh and maybe even try another IDE cable , I know it sounds odd ,but not all IDE cables are the same. Good luck to ya ....

Do you have the audio connector running from the Drive to the motherboard or sound card? NOT the IDE ribbon cable.. the AUDIO cable.

Do you see the drive in My Computer?
If you have everything hooked up correctly, try this:
Step 1: Start Registry Editor
Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK. Registry Editor starts.
Step 2: Delete the UpperFilters registry entry
1. In Registry Editor, expand My Computer, and then expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
2. Expand SYSTEM, and then expand CurrentControlSet.
3. Expand Control, and then expand Class.
4. Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
5. In the right pane (topic area), click UpperFilters.

Note An UpperFilters.bak registry entry may also appear. To delete the UpperFilters registry entry, you must click UpperFilters and not UpperFilters.bak.
6. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
7. When you receive the following message, click Yes to confirm the deletion of the UpperFilters registry entry:
Are you sure you want to delete this value?
The UpperFilters registry entry is removed from the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} registry subkey.

Note Do not exit Registry Editor. You must have this program for the next step.
Step 3: Delete the LowerFilters registry entry
5. In the right pane (topic area), click LowerFilters.

Note An LowerFilters.bak registry entry may also appear. To delete the LowerFilters registry entry, you must click LowerFilters and not LowerFilters.bak.
6. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
7. When you receive the following message, click Yes to confirm the deletion of the LowerFilters registry entry:
Are you sure you want to delete this value?
The LowerFilters registry entry is removed from the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} registry subkey.
8. Exit Registry Editor.

Step 4: Restart the computer
If a CD recording program no longer works after you restart the computer, you must reinstall the CD recording program.

IF this doesnt do it, make sure your CD power and data cables are secure at the drive, and motherboard.

Try having a peek at Event Viewer (Start>Run Type in eventvwr) have a look on the applications or systems tab and you will probably find some error events listed that occurred when you were using the drive.there is any error code listed and sometimes even a link to click for more information.
One possibility (remote) is that the secondary channel on the motherboard is faulty although if the device is recognised that's very unlikely.good luck anyway.
