It's really up to the developers. The PS3 has the potential to display better graphics than the 360, but if developers don't know how to tap into that potential, it's all for naught. People like Hideo Kojima knows how to get the most out of the PS3, so Metal Gear Solid looks really good. Cliffy B does the same thing for the 360, so Gears of War looks like it's years ahead of it's competitors.

Right now, the games that are on both the 360 and PS3 have nearly identical graphics. Some reviewers have given the 360 a slight nudge for better graphics, but the differences are so small that it's easily due to the PS3 being the "newer" console, as opposed to any serious shortcoming on the PS3's side.
Originally, the PS3 was going to use its Cell processor to do both the graphics and general processor work for the PS3. However, Sony couldn't get this to work, and at the last minute, plunked in a GPU from nVidia. Now the problem with this is that the GPU they chose is actually older and slower than the one that the 360 uses. This has brought up serious concerns that the PS3 is going to "peak" a lot sooner than the 360, which could result in later games looking BETTER on the 360 over the PS3.
It might be possible for Sony to eventually start using the Cell for graphics, and move some of those calculations out of the nVidia chip, but that remains to be seen. This may not even be possible, or may not even make enough of a difference to be worth the hassle.
If you're trying to decide which console is better, graphics isn't going to do it as they're virtually identical.
The 360 has the edge in price, online experience and games. Online experience will have to be re-evaluated when HOME goes live on the PS3 later this year. I know you already mentioned games, but even looking at the "coming soon" lists for both consoles, I still think the 360 has the edge - even if you ignore the behemoth that is "Halo3." The majority of the PS3's lineup remains multi-platform (mainly with the 360 or PC, or both) which just puts the PS3 in a position of weakness when you also consider it's a more expensive than even the 360 Elite.

I own both 360 and Ps3 and right now I would say that they look equal right NOW. However, in the 8 months Ps3 has been out it has caught up to and is now starting to surpass 360 in visuals. It also seems like Ps3 has consistantly better graphics with more items on screen.
This looks like it is about to change and Ps3 looks like it is pulling away from 360 in graphics. I just downloaded the demo for Heavenly Sword and it is beautiful!! Very smooth, and incredibly detailed. Ninja Gaiden Sigma is also incredible.
For right now I would give it a tie but Ps3 could be ahead as soon as next month!!
And whoever said the Wii looks like 360 or Ps3 is on crack! The Wii looks worse than a Ps2 or original Xbox! The Wii in my opinion is Nintendo worst system to date.
Take Care.

The PS3, 360, and Wii will all look relatively the same on a normal TV. The 360 and Wii currently beat the PS3 game wise, as they have MORE games, and the games play better. The 360 has had longer to work on control schemes, and the Wii-remote 3d sensing is great. I own a Wii, my friend owns a 360, and another owns a PS3. I can say the the Wii beats all. Also I dislike you're standpoint on buy systems just for graphics, but its up to you to waste your money. Unless you have an HDTV or would like to get some of the expected titles to be released on the PS3, I'd say get a 360 or Wii. You save money which can get you more games/accessories/etc.

The PS3.
the 360 has a similar architecture to a PC, so developers can get pretty good on it pretty quickly.
the PS3 has the better potential going forward as they get to grips with it's advantages. (try and find some of the recent HD trailers of Metal Gear 4, Gran Turismo 5, Killzone2 for evidence. (i don't have good links sorry, downloaded them thru my PS3))
Also don't discount the Blu-ray. The 360 is hampered by Microsofts insistence that all games will ship on DVD, but developers are already making use of the Blu-ray's extra room.

the PS3 is for sure. i have both and the PS3 is better. check out the demo to Gran Turismo HD and you will see. plus the P3 does have better potential cause its blue-ray, which is the better technology, DVD will be outdated in 2 years. plus the P3 plays quiter and smoother. also the P3s options to play files is alot better, with 360 you can only play WMVs, P3 will read anything, same as the music, get a P3.
