The school I am attending this fall reccomends a latitude over the inspirion model because they say that the parts used in them are more durable and reliable. Is this true? Or is it just to make you feel more confident when spending more money on a computer? Also should I consider other brands? I bought a Toshiba and refuse to buy from them again, it has been a nightmare.

Your school had been drinking the Dell Kool-Aid, as apparantly some other people have. The internal parts are the same, as in the processor, RAM, motherboard, hard drives, disc drives, etc. all the same. If you spend the big bucks for one of these new Latitude ATGs, you will be getting a more durable laptop than your standard Inspiron or Latitude, but your plain Latitudes have no real advantage over an Inspiron in terms of durability. Get whatever model suits your needs and fits best into your budget, don't worry whether it is an Inspiron or a Latitude, and also look at the new Vostros if those are available to you. As for other companies, Lenovo makes very good quality laptops if durability is a concern to you.

You may spend a little more on the Latitude than you would an Inspiron, but I believe the parts are better. I don't work for Dell, but at my old job I bought the computers for the company and they seemed to be good laptops. We had few complaints for the first 3 years. After that, about any laptop will start to hiccup. Get a MacBook if you can, though.

I work for a large company and they are pretty choicy about their computer hardware. All of our laptops are Dell Latitude. Other brands may or may not be better, but considering they chose the Latitude over the Inspiron says enough for me. Hope that helps and good luck.

no but a latitude has a dock connection on the botton to connect to a dock, it uses the same parts. it is the business line, its nothing fancy, it looks plain, like any other notebook. it uses the same parts as all other dell laptops. although whats nice is that wen u call up 2 customer support u talk 2 a person in the US not in sum call center in india.

Inspirons are geared towards home uses whereas Latitudes are geared towards businesses, so of course they will have better durability, better battery life, etc.
