Because the Republicans are lying. If they repeat the same lie often enough, they manage to make some gullible people think it's true.
Like that whole "support the troops" thing, when the Repubs didn't feel like giving the troops body armor, or a better raise, or medical care.
Or maybe they're all from Bizarro World where everything means the opposite.

I think because the Republican Congress turned into the 'Bush Brigade', putting party politics above all else. Sadly, there are many that are still drinking deep from that well (koolaid pitcher?). The Republican Party has been going downhill since they moved away from Goldwater Conservatism (small gov't) to cater to right-wing religious coalitions. That's just my 'armchair quarterback' viewpoint.
"While President Bush hailed the work of the Commission as "important for future administrations," his administration did everything it could to block and impede and the Commission from conducting its vital work."

Now you are beginning to understand why we need at least two opposing parties in this country. Two opposing views and plenty of checks and balances.
There is a time and place for diplomacy - and, unfortunately, there is also a time and place for confrontation.

Because Republicans had to deal with silly liberals whining about the need to surrender, or pitching a fit over Supreme Court nominees that actually vote against discrimination...
