I have a 1986 Nissan Maxima, the other day it wouldnt start, I got a jump, it started. But as soon as the jumper cables were disconnected the volt meter on my dash went from like 12 volts and slowly started trickling down until the car just died out again. This went on for several tries. Is my battery completely dead or is something draining all the juice, like maybe the alternator? I was about to go and purchase a brand new battery, but i was told that if its the alternator, it's going to do the same thing to a new battery. Can anyone help me figure this out? I'll have to go the local salvage yard and pull out an alternator from the same model car, if it is the alternator. But I don't want to do that if that's not the problem. And by the way, which size rachet attachment would I use to pull out an alternator anyways? HELP!!! I'm a Dansel in Distress!!

Indeed this sounds like the alternator. Power problems can be tricky though dead battery cells and such have tricked even mechanics. Luckily there are some testing devices out there that make it a no-brain-er. If you can jump it off long enough to get it to a car part store such as Autozone, O'Reilys, Napa they will test it for free and even be able to jump you off.

ALTERNATOR AND YOU WILL HAVE TO SLOW CHARGE THE BATTERY BACK UP..24 TO 72 HOURS.

JUST TAKE THE COMPLETE SET OF METRIC SOCKETS WITH YOU AND AN EXTENSION AS WELL.
