This is a personal choice for you, there are many brands and options out there so don't be afraid to try a variety. Buy a few different brands in the trail or travel sizes and see what you like best.
You are right you should start with the least absorbent you can, even regular is okay, just don't start with supers. Application is again really up to you, if you log onto the tampons websites you can have them send you free samples so that you are not wasting your money trying everything out there.

Tampax Pearl is best in my opinion. You probably want to start off with junior or slender size. You should definitely use an applicator- it makes it much easier to put in. It also helps to talk about this with your mom, sister (if you have a older one), or friend. Make sure when you are putting it in, you relax. You may have to try it a couple of times before you finally insert it comfortably. Hope this helps! Good luck!!

I don't know what age you are, but when I first started using tampons I got the Playtex Slenders for Teens. They were really nice to start out with cause they went in so easily. If you choose to get that brand or not, get the plastic applicators and not the cardboard because they are much easier to get it. Now I use the Playtex Sport tampons and they are the best ever. But, still start out with the slender ones.
Good Luck!
(p.s. when you first put it in, RELAX! It will go in much easier if you aren't nervous cause your muscles will be loose!)

I like platex and they have a teen one. The reason I prefer playtex to tampax is the way they expand. Platex expands out and doesn't get any longer. Tampax expands lengthwise and the length is uncomfortable for me. I agree with whomever said to try it first when your period is the heaviest. One of the most uncomfortable feelings in the world is trying to pull out a dry tampon

Use one with a plastic applicator, and low absorbancy. Medium is probably the best size.
***If it is your first time useing one, wait until your period is heaviest, because it makes it easier to put in and pull out. Just remember to relax.

Go to the Tampax website. They even have a section "Help me Choose". From there they will help you and answer questions. http://www.tampax.com/helpmechoose0.php Also check out the FAQs. They do have a tampon called Slimline or something like that for first timers.

o.b. is the most earth friendly - no applicator.
they are pretty fool proof. Just make sure you're comfortable and that you change it often.
* try borrowing a couple from mom, aunt or friends to try a variety. - this will help you figure out what you like.
**yes, I'm a girl - this is my husbands icon! :)
