For those who said the plan is to stay until Iraq security can take over,

Why aren't we making progress in this respect?

US Army basic training is 9 weeks, we've been in Iraq 5 years. What is th hold up???

are we really trying to train them to assume responsibility for their own security?

The plan, supposedly, all along has been for our combat troops to stay in Iraq until Iraq's security can take over for themselves and until they can get their government in order.
That is why the democrats are pushing for benchmarks to be met by the Iraqi government.

I would like to advance a third option; we gather up all the politicians from all the parties, put them in a uniform and ship them to iraq as replacements for our troops. Then we americans could just set back and enjoy the peace and quiet and get along fine until the politicians figured out how to get back to the good old usa????

We stayed in Germany for decades after WW2. We stay in Iraq because it will put pressure on other thugs in the Middle East. We are building a $600 million embassy. We are planning on being there for a while

Stay in Iraq until Iraqis can take control of their security.
Keep permanent bases in Iraq

*We aren't making progress according to your timetable. It will take years, as we were told from the onset.

Yes we really are training them.

If we leave now, it'll upset the GOP status quo of "pillage and steal".

If we stay in Iraq with no plan to leave, the GOP continues to make their defense contractor buddies rich beyond their dreams of avarice.

War is a big business for the Republicans, you know.

You don't make any money during peacetime. :0)

To put it plainly: yes.

While polititians may waffle a bit, these are indefinitely the only two true options.

No. But no one has come up with anything in between.
