They like to stay under trees and in shadowy areas. Hope this will help you, because I can't think of any way to attract them.

Actually the flashlight suggestion works! I did it with my kids last night. We saw lightening bugs in the front yard so we went around back to catch some. We get back there and didn't see one. I got the flashlight and started blinking it twice and in no time we had all the lightning bugs we could handle. We have a big back yard with a nice wooded area, I'm really not sure but I think having lots of trees helps. We had a lightening bug "event" here about 2 years ago. Early in the summer, the first night we noticed them, our entire yard, including trees were so full of lightening bugs that we were really blown away and amazed. We sat out there watching the show for a few hours. It was like everything was just covered in them. I don't know what attracted them that night but wow. I've been hoping for the same thing to happen since. This might not be very helpful, it's late and now im rambling...lol

Sorry had to come back with a joke.....

Grab a flash light and learn how to flash the mating call. JK ;)

Anyhow, I wish I knew the answer to that. I have fire flies every year. The only thing I can account for that is that I am a gardener and I may have what they need. They eat other insects and I know my yard is full of insects so that could be it. I also have plenty of vegetation and shrubs which they seem to love. All you have to do is disturb my shrubs and you get a light show.

I don't think it' s possible either. I think they are all of one sex and the opposite sex doesn't fly about but stays on the ground and this is what attracts them. I could be wrong.
