If thats whats wrong get the transmission rebuilt by a national chain Ammco etc. They have lifetime guaranties. Another used car could need the same repair. If you've had good luck till now and like the car fix it.

It's prudent to get at least three quotes from trans rebuild shops to firstly get an accurate idea as to what the rebuild will cost and secondly to weigh the cost versus a replacement vehicle. The Consumer Guide website has info about the repair cost for a Sunfire being in the neighborhood of $7xx. You can see it here (Scroll down to 'Estimated Repair Costs'):

IF THIS IS ALL THAT IS WRONG WITH IT AND YOU HAVE JUST DONE THE REGULAR MAINTENANCE ON IT FOR THE PAST 4 YEARS THEN I WOULD SAY PUT A REBUILT TRANS IN IT AND KEEP THE VEHICLE.

call your local chev dealer and see how much gm wants for a rebuilt .. it should b around 1500.00 for the trans then about 400.00 to replace the trans

Most people do a cost benefit analysis when they have to do major repair to their car.

If you paid $5300 for the car

and if you have spent more than that amount on repairs including this repair then you should get a new car

If not get it fixed

If the car is paid off and you like it and intend to keep driving it then I'd spend the money and get the work needed done to it.
