It depends. Usually if you just go to an ER for an unrelated thing, they will test your urine. The urine gives you a positive or negative result. If you told them you suspected you were pregnant and were having bleeding or something they would test your blood. There is a test for the blood that will tell you how far along you are, not just a positive - negative result. So if you did not go to the ER for something pregnancy related they would have done just a urine. If you went say for abnormal vaginal bleeding and cramps, then they would also do the blood in case you were having a tubal. I hope this helped.

Im neither of the above , but when i went to casualty, (er) they took urine samples and blood tests but in minutes from the urine they were able to tell me i was still pregnant , and arranged a scan for me within a few days ( that was as i was visiting family so i was an hospital out of my area) i got other results in a day or two.
they can get an almost instant result from the urine , but they can glean a lot more info than yes or no from the blood test.

Depends on the situation, and the hospital. Usually they will use the urine sample, unless they think you are too early to tell with that. Also, if they have inconclusive results that point to you possibly being pregnant, but with a negative urine test...they'll probably check your blood. HCG shows up A LOT earlier in your blood than urine.

Both. The urine test is quicker but the blood test is more reliable.

They can use both. Probably will do the urine first because it is quicker but then will confirm with the blood test.

You can take either. They give you a urine one first cuz they are cheaper. If you have symptoms that could hurt a baby they will give you a blood so they can get an idea of how far along you are.
