....... your tongue just automatically gravitates to that spot and fiddles with it no matter how hard you resist?

I've had an section of infected gum that was a millimeter large and still felt like I warranted morphine. I've also been through a great dental transformation involving caps..including the caps not matching and having to wear my temporary caps for 3 or 4 weeks. I had to fight my urges when one temp split in two and I glued it back on with poly-dent.(playing with it wasn't advised but I did)
I blame the tongue...it's so sensitive and has so many nerve endings that it can't help itself. I'm sure that tongues are the most sensitive organs that the human body has..thus it imagines everything to be enormous. Great when we're tasting something yummy but annoying when we sense a disruptive influence.

I'm not sure why, but I have such a broken spot on my back molar right now, and your question made me fiddle with it again.

I think it has been trying to see if the edge is less jagged and sharp. It does wear somewhat smooth if you don't get to a dentist and get it fixed, which I cannot afford to do. Perhaps I feel rubbing it with my rough tongue is hurrying that process; filing it down, in effect.

well, even though your teeth are small , in your mouth they feel like Mt. everest, so your tongue can't resist. That was kind of a rhyme., but not really.

Good question, and I don't really know, but it's like we want more pain. Because no matter what it keeps happening. I believe we're all guilty of this too!

Tongues have their own brains, hence also have feelings and emotions.
This explains their primal need to taste and fiddle with things you don't want them to.

I do the same thing. Then the tongue gets sore, too!

That means you're not weird.

I am sure I know what you mean - it just seems to happen! I never could work out why.

Its instinct, the emotions believe something is wrong and we need to check it out.
