Although I am certainly not in favor of the needless slaughter of animals for consumption and furs, I cannot support PETA because they are against animal testing for pharmaceutical drugs.
I am one of the tens of thousands of people who are alive today due to the animal testing that is part of the Clinical Trials process. There are millions more that will benefit from this research - which CANNOT be done any other way, per FDA guidelines - and that might die waiting for a new life-saving drug, if PETA gets its way.

They have a good baseline message, but they just take it WAY too far. I haven't liked them since I heard they go to dog shows and let all the dogs out of their cages so they can be "free" and then the dogs run out into traffic and get run over... when the majority of people who put their dogs in shows dote on their dogs like children and spoil the heck out of them, rather than the abuse PETA thinks they do.
There's this show on VH1 called Rock of Love with Bret Michaels, it's hilarious! But anyway, one of the girls is all, "I hate animals, the only good animal is a dead animal!" and another girl is all, "I support PETA, I love animals, animals have rights!" It's just hilarious to watch them go at it. Two people on both extreme ends of the spectrum.

Because PETA engages in some extreme methods to get its message heard. As an advocacy organization, it is not as effective or respectable as the Humane Society or ASPCA.

Peta is a cult - not a group that supports animals. In actuality, Peta kills 2/3 of the animals it "liberates".
Why do some people SUPPORT Peta?

Because of this, for one:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/People_for_the_Ethical_Treatment_of_Animals#Animal_euthanasia_and_criminal_charges
Stopping dog fighting is one thing. That's a noble cause. But trying to force other people to be vegetarian, and forcing them not to wear a fur coat, like with this:
http://www.greatestcities.com/0299pic/916/CP18916.jpg/Sophie_Ellis_Bextor_for_PETA.jpg
is not cool. Let people do what they want, and just stick to keeping animals from being abused, and people will leave you alone.
Wait, I've got more:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Your_Mommy_Kills_Animals
I mean, do you REALLY not see how this can offend normal, decent people? Don't get me wrong, PETA has done a lot of good, but they also go overboard as well.

Well the fact that they post secret cameras everywhere is a bit disturbing. Sure they are saving animals this way but that is a violation of privacy! Come on! Also they stretch the truth sometimes which makes you wonder.

some people think that PETA is a little too..fascist, when it comes to demanding society to become vegetarian/vegan, and this turns some people off to their ideas.
