I live in a condo, and I know that normally for common walls you would need 5/8" drywall for fire resistance, but I am buying greenboard for the bathtub area and I'm finding it hard to find 5/8" greenboard, I can only seem to find 1/2", is it okay to use that??

1/2" or 3/8" either one is fine just be sure to use greenboard not regular sheetrock.

I've been in the trades a long time, and 5/8ths is more used in commercial applications. In fact I just not long ago replaced 11,000 sq. ft. of it. 1/2 inch is most usual for a residence. NO matter what room it is.

If you've gone down as far as studs, GREEN might be OK for non bath/shower areas, but common now in my jobs, I use concrete backerboard, NOT drywall at all. Fire retardant can just as easily NOT be an issue in 1/2 inch. 3/8 or 1/4 is Mobile Home drywall.

i use backerboard just on the bottom 1/2 of the tub.. never had anytroubles in 15years. they also have 1/2" fire rated drywall. ive used alot of regular drywall around tubs without troubles and ive seen greenboard fall apart many times.. pretty much done everything in working with 40 apts 40+ baths. backer board (concrete) is the only thing that stands up. drywall and green board fall apart when there is water getting to them.. its just green last a lil longer

As long as you are not putting 1/2" on the ceiling it should be fine. If the floor/ceiling joists are spread to far apart the 1/2" drywall will droop.
