The tree/shrub has a reddish bark and has blackish berries on it. The berries are smaller than a pearl and start off tiny and green. The flowers start off white and soft but when the berries fall off, the flowers turn red/purpleish and become hard.

Hi Sami,

It is a poke plant..a big weed...and will come back year after year ...if let go it will get huge.....they are kind of pretty...we have a couple in the back of our garden that we allow to grow ..they make a nice back drop.......

a lot of older people around here during the spring will pick the leaves off the new plants and make something they call "greens"...basically a variety of weeds cooked together...

* the berries are poisonous ..and so are the leaves when they are mature...so don't eat them....*

Yup, it's a pokeberry or poke weed. It's purple berries will stain anything purple and it will grow into a large tree like shrub. Most parts of the plant are poisonous, though you can cook the shoots and even make pies with the berries if they are well cooked. Birds love the berries and you will probably find many nests or roosts near your plant. It is also said to attract black bears...

It's Phytolacca americana, Common Pokeweed. Here is a link to the Pokeweed entry in Wikipedia. The reference is very thorough with this exception: Pokeweed, once allowed to become established, is a pernicious weed. It develops a tuberous root which can grow extremely large; some I have dug up around my property were almost 2 feet in diameter. if you pull it up but have left even the smallest piece, it will come back. And as a late-summer/ fall staple for non-migrating birds, it will be spread by seed unless cut it down.

Several have already identifed this weed, it is a poke ... birds love the berries and it makes them drun when they eat them...the weed is prolific and wil spread. If you want to get rid of them, you have to grip the plant at the bottom and put upwards. The root looks like a big long white radish, and it usually breaks if the plants is allowed to grow too bid....
