My roommate is a smoker and she's moving out in 2 months. My boyfriend and I want to give the apartment a total cleaning from the top down. Since she has the master bedroom now, and smokes in there, I want to be sure to completely get rid of any trace of smoke on the walls, in the carpet and windows?

1/2 cup bleach to 1 gallon water and a whole lot a sponges or cloth towels. Just scrub the walls down real good. Wash the drapes with 1/2 cup baking soda and detergeant and let them air dry in the sun. As for any carpets, you have to clean them 5-6 times to get all that nicotine out and then when they are dry, spray them with some ODOBAN (Wal-Mart in the laundry isle by the Febreeze). It is a spray that kills the bacteria that causes the smell rather than masking it like Febreeze. Scrub those windows with a 1 part vinegar to 4 parts water in a spray bottle and clean up with newpaper. The newsprint really make it shine. You can use BarKeepers Friend (Wal-Mart cleaning isle near the Comet) to give the bathroom a real scrub that will eliminate all traces of the nicotine stains on them.

Depending on how long she was in that room and how often she smoked the walls could be stained from the smoke. Compare the walls in the room closely to walls in a room that she never smoked in. If you notice a dingy color then you will probably want to paint. If so, that clears up most of your problems with the smell at the same time. Also, take the opportunity now when there's no furniture in the room and clean the carpets. After that, you should have NO cigerette smell at all.

Wash the walls down with a mild cleaner like Murphy's and do the base boards as well.. Wash any window treatments.. Sprinkle the carpets, even the closet with baking soda and vacuum.. You may have to repeat the process.. Clean the windows with glass cleaner/newspaper Good luck.... Yes, Murphy's is mainly used on wood... but you can use it diluted to wash walls... Or you can use TSP Trisodium Phosphate available at most hardware stores... To wash down walls....

Use Odo ban to both clean most of the surfaces and as a fabric refresher.
You can also try Pledge Muliti purpose. It is great on so many surfaces.
Have any carpet steam cleaned, light a smokers candle every day for several hours and fill the room with fresh fragrant flowers.
Good luck.

Unfortunately you will find it hard to get rid of the disgusting smell. One good way to lessen the smell is to wash the walls with eucalyptus and warm water.
Hi you can find eucalyptus in some drug stores or large department stores. It mostly comes from Australia so if you have any Australian specialty stores around try one or otherwise e b a y is always there for you to get it. It smells really great and refreshing. Remember to put it in warm water do not put it on the wall straight from the bottle. Make sure it is diluted

Have a complete wash on all washables ...dry the carpet, mattress in the sun for a day, mop the floor and dry clean the wall. Charcoal is a good scent removal.so put a kilo in your room after the above for one week. Put a pot or two indoor plant and some dry roses. That will do it

The only way to get rid of it on the walls is to put a fresh coat of paint of them. The carpets should be shampooed. If you have cheap vinyl blinds, put them in the tub with some dish soap and rinse them (or just buy new ones, only a few dollars at Home Depot).
Good luck.

Paint for best results, wash curtains along with all washables a couple of times, shampoo carpets or better have it done for best results. Cleaning could end up being more expensive than paint and shampooing.
