Whats your preference? Romance, adventure, mystery, historical novels, non-fiction?

I have been reading for escapism lately, Sue Grafton books, Kinsey Millhone is my "grown up" Nancy Drew.

Also reading a lot of books about women's relationships set on islands or on the ocean for some reason, like "Up Island" Anne River Siddons, I seem to need to delve into the lives of other women facing challenges and change.

I have Wilbur Smith waiting for when I feel like a trip to Africa again. I really love his books.

And Joseph Wambaugh, Andrew Greeley and John Grisholm also waiting ..

Books I have read several times, The Source and The Covenant, James Michener

I think they would think this is a civilization that has isolated itself from human contact with others, given all the communication devises and solitary entertainment devises found.

Wow! It is really tooooo bad some of us (all of us!) in this group can't get together. Isotope, I am also a fan of Wilbur Smith, and of Michener and Grisham. I read all of Smith's books on Africa, all of Grisham, and a lot of Michener. I just finished reading Michener's Alaska. My favorites are Alaska, The Source, and The Covenent. Next Michener's Centennial.
I like historical fiction, mysteries, especially mysteries by Janet Evanovich. Love her books. I'm also a very dedicated film fan, but that's another topic!

I'm a big fan of Historical Fiction, and Wilbur Smith is one of my all time favorites.

Recently I was introduced to Diana Gabladon and her 'Outlander' series. Absoloutely fabulous!
Outlander
Dragonfly in amber
Voyager
Drums of Autumn
The Fiery Cross
A breath of snow and ashes.
About a woman from the 1940's who steps thru a stone circle into another time (Late 1700's) Scotland. Her training as a nurse, how she adapts the local herbs for her use, and her love of a dashing scotsman. Historical romance at it's finest, to rival Wilbur Smith even. Lots of research went into these books.

Like you, I am a John Grisham fan and have read everything the man has ever written, including his most recent non fiction book "An Innocent Man" set in Ada, Ok where a mentally ill man is railroaded by the local authorities for murder and spends many years on death row. You will be appalled at the injustice done to a fellow human being. Those that are for the death penalty may seriously re-think their stand after reading this.

Since Gabladon, Grisham, and Smith are pretty intense storytellers, sometimes I like to relax with something silly. Enter Janet Evonovich and her books on bumbling bounty hunter Stephanie Plum. She always has me in stitches.

I'm also a die hard Stephen King fan, as well as Dean Koontz.

I've read many of James Patterson and Patricia Cornwell's books, and while I acknowledge they are both good, I prefer Smith, (Gabladon had only the one series) and the others mentioned.

While I spent some time in Tombstone, AZ, I became aquainted with local author (now in Seattle) JA Jance. For anyone who likes a mystery, her Sheriff Joanna Brady series is what I think of as an 'easy read'. I can finish one of her books in 2 days and be ready to pick up the next one.

:) Alex

Love fantasy and science fiction and also historical fiction, especially medieval and I like mysteries. For instance I enjoyed the Da Vinci Code. I also love science and archaelogy and books about gardening and home improvement.
My favorite book ever was probably The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley.

I'm currently reading :
Italian Vegetarian Cooking
The Savory Way
Bon Appetit
Chosen By The Spirits
Venus Envy and when I finish this, Soul Song

Yes, I read cookbooks. They're expensive to buy so I pick up a couple at the library each trip and read through them for the recipes I might want to keep.

And I read romances...I try for the lighter side. I used to shun these as fluff but these days they tickle me.

And I keep the spirituals around all the time. I remind myself about the power of light this way.

So that's my week-end reading list.

I just finished Dean Koontz's "The Husband" and I'm about ready to start Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

When I read something deep I usually follow it by something light, like Janet Evanovich, Sue Grafton, Lillian Jackson Braun, Rita Mae Brown and other easy-to-read writers.

Presently I am reading Brave New World. On my list are The Cultural Creatives, Bait and Switch, A Season in Hell, Wild at Heart by Barry Gifford. The last book I read was Night People by Barry Gifford. I love his style. When he introduces a new character, it's just like a shotgun blast.

Anne Rice is my favorite author, so I would have to say anything by Rice would suit me just fine. I particularly liked "The Mummy." She managed to make him quite a sexy guy which is a neat trick for a guy that has been dead for thousands of years. I particularly enjoyed the love story of Ramses (the pharoah mummy) and Cleopatra. Even though they lived at different times, that is not a problem for "The Mummy."

A "lighter" book that is a lot quicker read would be
Pirate Shirt Dot Com

Or, you can check at your local library. Maybe if they don't have these books, or others you would like, they wlll get them for you on interlibrary loan.
