EDIT: The people who are answering the egg (the evolutionists?) are really saying that evolution created first a process for the reproduction of chickens, then the chicken grew out of that? Absurd! Generally speaking, the organism achieves maturity first, then it develops a reproductive system. Ergo, the chicken came first whether you have a creationist or evolutionist view..

Oddly, most people do not understand that the basis behind this question is actually an asking of two intertwined questions:
(1) Creationism or Evolution?
(2) Actuality or Potentiality? (as origin)

The person who answers, "chicken" typically leans toward a creationism whereby God created the chicken complete and gave it the means to produce more of itself.
The person who answers, "egg" typically leans toward a evolutionary point of view whereby eggs existed (through amphibians and reptile) before any birds existed.

As to the "actual" answer, I would simply say, I don't know.
