I know a lot of people say its not, but to me it is. How can you respect people, love people, life a fulfilled life, if you are not fulfilled. I think its the most important thing to strive for. To have personal happiness does not mean you have to achieve it through monetary or material means...you can do it spritually or personally! To know yourself and to be accepting of who you are..those are the only things that should matter first! Self love does not have to be an ego trip..it all depends on the person!

Well, yes and no. I think happiness should be the byproduct not the goal in itself...your goal should be to love yourself and others, to look for the beauty in life, to live with passion and creativity, to follow your dreams...the funny thing is that if you do those things then you will be quite happy. If you don't you won't. If you make happiness the goal, vague unattainable happiness, then it might be a bit like trying to win the lottery, you don't know how, it might take a miracle, you just know you want it...
Trying to find happiness is like trying to catch a ladybug. Don't look for it. Don't try so hard. Just put yourself where ladybugs (happiness) may be and let one land on you (this concept is mentioned in the movie "Under the Tuscan Sun" -- great film by the way!)
So, for example, if you're an aspiring artist & musician. Don't sit around wishing you could be happy, just paint & play music & meet other artists & musicians & before you know it you are happy.
Be who you are. Live an authentic life. That should be your most important goal. Happiness is just a result, the icing on the cake...

It's not that it's the most important goal, tho it is, but it is the FIRST goal. You have to have some minimal degree of personal happiness in your life before you can care about anything else. If you are not happy, it doesn't matter if you are wealthy, famous, charitable, anything. Happiness is the layer that touches our skin. Once happy, we can build up other interests and activities, which may ultimately become way more important to us than our own pleasure of the moment.
Also, happiness doesn't just mean "pleasure of the moment", it more means emotional functionality. Emotional health. Happy people are often very unhappy, as odd as that sounds, but they are not broken.
So yes, happiness must come first, but it likely won't be the ultimate accomplishment in a full life.

Happiness cannot be made a direct goal in life, it is always the byproduct of doing something worth-while.
To pursue happiness directly is always to miss it.

I have to say that my goals circles around my vision of happiness, but then again, in attempt to achieve my goals, I don't feel happy.
In a way it is I guess.

No, there are many questions similar to this, most of them i've given answers for...
First off, happiness is temporary, we should be searching for joy instead.
Many people don't understand the happiness you get from serving people.... Humbleness should be important, don't make your time on Earth all about you.

Yes.
You cannot lead where you will not go and you cannot teach what you do not know.
I be live the the only way to share happiness is to know what happiness is and to be happy. You've got to go there in order to know there and your got to know there in order to show there.
Besides, once there, life is good!

It should be - and I don't consider it a selfish goal. Everyone should think of themselves as their "main project." You aren't much of a friend, a partner, an employee or anything if you aren't happy with yourself.

It's the only thing I've ever wanted. And the only thing I've never had. Birthday candles wishes are bogus.
Why did I want it and almost die for it? Because that's what I thought it ment to be human. I thought that was the reward for being the best I can be.
