When "y varies directly as x", that means y = kx for some constant k. When two variables, say x and y, "vary inversely", then xy = k.

1. y = kx, and we're told y=27 when x=3 so 27 = k*3, so k = 9. This means when y=45 we have 45 = 9*x, so x=5.

2. You should be able to figure this out using the definition I have for "varies inversely" and the same kind of reasoning from #1.

3. Slope-intercept form is y = mx + b, so this is a matter of finding the right values for m and b. Use the defintion of slope (rise over run) to get m, which is the slope. m = (change in y)/(change in x) = (-2-4) / (6-2) = etc. Once you have the slope, plug it into y = mx + b along with one of the points, so that you can find b. Then you'll have the full equation.

4. Put it in slope-intercept form, and look at the numbers that correspond to m and b.

5. Come on, you can do this one.

1. It is evident that y = 9x, so if y = 45, x = 5.
2. Here, y = 72/x, so if y = 36, then x = 2.
3. We want y = mx + C, where 4 = 2m + C and -2 = 6m + C. Solve this linear system for m and C, and you're done.
4. Recast this in the form of y = mx + C, and the answer will be obvious.
5. This is simple artithmetic; the answer is +6.

1.From your given information, the equation that applies is y = kXSolve for the value of k by writing 27 = 3k k = 27/3 = 9.So the equation is45 = 9X; X =45/9,, X = 5.. QED.
2. y = m/x,, 24 = m/3, m = 72, so y = 72/X, and 36 = 72/X, X = 72/36 = 2. QED

1. suppose y varies directly as x and y = 27 when x=3.
find x when y = 45.

y = 9x since y = 27 when x = 3

So, if y = 45, x = 45 / 9 = 5

x is 5 when y = 45
