You can not not read Asimov's Foundation series, which won the Hugo ( Or was that Nebula) award, beating Tolkien's LOTR trilogy .
If you enjoyed the Inheritance trilogy by that teenage writer Christopher Paolini, You might like Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McAffrey. Actually, if you liked X-Men, you could try her Talent series as well, inwhich people with psychic powers setup a corporation which makes money by using there powers of telekinesis (in transport sector and space travel)/ premonitions( in insurance industry and disaster control etc.) and stuff. Her other famous series include "Crystal singer" and "Powers that be" with Ann Scarborough.
I didn't mind the Gaia trilogy by John Varley. Its about a space mission that crashlands( or if you prefer, stumbles upon) on an alien wheel like thingy in the solar system. That's a bit weird though.
----
For some reason, I didn't like Heinlein, his endings were damp squibs and the humour a bit too loud ( too much wit is like 3 muchsaly, and you need toadd more to a story than just a supposedly funny bit of verbal sparring,)

C.S. Lewis has a good series of both. His scifi series The Space Trilogy is underrated, but very well done. I'm sure you know his fantasy series the Chronicles of Narnia. Though it's written for children, it is enjoyable to adults too!
Oh, and you should try Ted Dekker's The Circle Trilogy. It's a fast paced fantasy/thriller!

Octavia Butler has an excellent Sci Fi series that starts (I think) with "Dawn", followed by "Adult Rites" and "Imago". You also could try short story collections such as "The Year's Best Science Fiction", edited by Gardner Dozois. Then you might find an author whose work you like. Could also consider "The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction". A few authors who've written stories l like in the magazine are: Ellen Klages, Harvey Jacobs, and Robert Grossbach. Tananarive Due also writes some great sci fi/fantasy.

The Sword of Truth Series by Terry Goodkind is by far my favorite. It has 11 books total (the last one coming out in Nov) so it isn't too long of a series and is easy to find the books order. It starts with Wizards First Rule and only gets better and better as the series progresses. I don't know anyone who has read this series and not loved it! Barnesandnoble.com has great reviews and summaries if you want to know more about them. Here is a link to the first book so you don't even have to look for it!

It's obvious, you must read Gene Wolf's "Book of the New Sun " series ...
- Shadow of the Torturer
- The Claw of the Conciliator
- The Sword of the Lictor
- The Citadel of the Autarch
... but this is for the more advanced reader ...

Hey I've answered a question or two just like this one already. Here are my suggestions:
I'm mostly a fantasy, sci-fi reader as well, and am 14 years old.
***Indicates stuff i REALLY liked...the more stars the better.
~~~
BOOKS TO READ:
*Fablehaven (Series) -- Brandon Mull (pretty good, haven’t read no. 3 yet)
****The Chronicles of Narnia (Series)-- C. S. Lewis (one of the first fantasy series I read, and still a favourite)
***Inheritance Trilogy (Eragon, Eldest) -- Christopher Paolini (GOOD…nice long fantasy novels lol)
The Dark is Rising (Series) -- Susan Cooper (okay, but then I haven’t read them all yet)
*Inkheart (Series) -- Cornelia Funke (okay, but the first one was better than the 2nd)
***Peter Pan and the Starcatchers, Peter Pan and the Shadow Thieves -- Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson (liked these lots)
*Kingdom Keepers -- Ridley Pearson (interesting at the least)
***Artemis Fowl (Series) -- Eoin Colfer (one of my favorites)
**The Supernaturalist -- also by Eoin Colfer (good as well)
anything else written by Eoin Colfer, for that matter...
anything written by Eric Walters, Louis Sachar or Edward Bloor (not fantasy but I like it anyways.) =)
*Ella Enchanted, Fairest, etc. -- Gail Carson Levine (liked these ones--she's written other stuff too but a lot of it is aimed at a younger age group than me)
****Abhorsen (Trilogy) -- Garth Nix (AMAZING)
**Keys to the Kingdom (Series) -- Garth Nix (liked these ones too)
*MacDonald Hall (Series) -- Gordon Korman (really funny--all the books he's written are good, not too much depth to most of them, they're best used as quick reads when you don't want to get too much into a novel or won't have the time to finish a longer book, but still want the satisfaction of reading a good story)
*Island, Everest, Dive (3 seperate trilogies) -- again by Gordon Korman (good)
The Serpent’s Egg (Trilogy) -- J. Fitzgerald McCurdy (okay, just barely started reading though)
****Harry Potter (Series) -- J. K. Rowling (lol lot of people have already recommended these…but I really liked them too, so whatever)
****Maximum Ride (Trilogy...action/little bit sci-fi) -- James Patterson (LOVED ‘EM ALL)
****Bartimaeus Trilogy -- Jonathan Stroud (REALLY good)
*The Leap -- Jonathan Stroud (sortof fantasy but not really...if you like a definate explained ending to everything don't read it…I really liked it though)
The Last Seige -- Jonathan Stroud (another non-fantasy but still good)
Bridge to Terabithia --Katherine Patterson (sad ending...) :(
A Series of Unfortunate Events (Series...duh lol) -- Lemony Snicket
**A Wrinkle in Time (Series) -- Madelaine L’Engle
**Leven Thumps (Series) -- Obert Skye (amusing)
Children of the Lamp (Series) -- P. B. Kerr
**His Dark Materials (Trilogy) -- Phillip Pullman (pretty darn good)
Percy Jackson and the Olympians (Series) -- Rick Riordan (okay I guess)
***Lost years of Merlin (Series) -- T. A. Barron (good as well)
****The Great Tree of Avalon (Trilogy) -- T. A. Barron (GREAT READS)
