When you make a law about something you believe in that you are forcing your views on others who may not feel the same way as you do?

Yes it is both sides. I just see so much complaining from the left about this.

i don't mean to be harsh...what you state is exactly what gets some concerned when a push is made to legislate morality. the courts are where this really gets played out. as they decide what is or is not acceptable law. the concern about "conservative" supreme court judges, was that their views, as expressed from the bench , would restrict or take away rights all Americans currently have. some voiced concern about "activist" (read liberal) judges, as expressed from the bench, allowing too much freedom of action. do you see what's taking place? liberal thought tends to give you the choice of doing something or not. conservative thought tends to restrict your opportunity to choose for yourself. so you must ask yourself...which political persuasion is "forcing...views" on all of us? if the answer isn't clear to you, there isn't much more to be said.

I think that they get that part. It's fairly clear that liberals (and conservatives) often realize that they are forcing their views on others...that is often teh whole point of passing a law...they can't get people to do things their way by any other means than by the coercion of the law.

Prohibition of alcohol was a classic example of this mindset (and an arguably "conservative" one at that, though it very closely resembles the modern debate about tobacco smoking that has often been cast as a "liberal" cause, despite strong support for tobacco prohibition by "conservative" religious groups, such as Mormons and some Evangelicals).

It's not a matter of not realizing this...more a matter of not caring that others disagree with their cause. This holds for all zealots, regardless of their placement on the political spectrum.

Tell your right wing fundies that in the GOP who are trying to control women's bodies. Tell that to your corporate capitalists in the GOP that same thing, who lobby for laws to protect their interests over the interests of the neighbors who live in the vacinity of their polluting industries. Tell that to your president and to the GOP who passed the patriot act I and patriot act II. Trust me on this when I tell you, the GOP has done far more damage to this country in terms of forcing their views onto the American people than any liberal has done.

I've got a great idea - let's base laws on things no one believes in . . . Perhaps we could ask the Easter Bunny to be Chief Justice and Santa for President. Excellent question.

You see the complaining from the left because that's all you WANT to see.

Were there any laws in particular you would like to discuss?

I'm here waiting...

That's true for any politician of any political view, including conservatives. The big difference between liberals and conservatives in the U.S. right now is that the conservatives ignore the law when they don't like it.

Wouldn't that be fundamental true regardless of your political beliefs? It is not only liberals that create legislation based on personal beliefs.
