Take it from someone who graduated in 1989 - Hairspray is not the movie to get suggestions from.
I can give you a quick run down. We didn't really have hairpieces if you are referring to things like extensions and clip-on hair that you can buy now. Hair accessories mainly consisted of 'banana clips' and lots of hairspray. The big hairstyle was lots of curled and teased bangs with your sides sprayed out away from your ears like Dumbo. (I don't know what we were thinking)
Leg Warmers were a hit but only in the early 80's. By mid-80's it was all about slouch socks with white canvas sneakers with lots of friendship pins.
Also - both girls and guys both wore button down oxford style shirts and the collars were always - always - turned up. Never folded down. And if it was winter, you wore a turtle neck under your oxford shirt.
We didn't really do the capri's then but we had "fold and roll". HAHAHA. Along with the slouch socks, if your jeans weren't already super skinny at the ankle, you folded them over on the outside and rolled them like twice so the ankle area was nice and tight.
Skirts - they were either very long or very short and again - you always wore them with the slouch socks and white canvas sneakers.
and one last little accessory - the single big hoop earing (with or without the janet jackson key like in the 'Rhythm Nation' video) along with a single stud in the other ear. God forbid if our earrings actually matched...
I hope this gives you some insight as to our fashion sense back then. On a high note - I have noticed that the 'turned-up-collar-thing' is coming back in style. Noticed it just the other night on "Big Brother". I may have to go dig out my old button down oxford shirts in a varying array of pastels.....
Geesh I need a drink!! I am and always will be an 80's Diva!!

Enormous clunky earrings. Shoulder pads in dresses and blouses that made a girl look like a football linebacker. Very long skirts. Everything oversized. Big sweaters falling off of the shoulder. Very bad decade for us girls!

Oh wow! That was my fashion decade!
We wore pumps--Etienne Aigner pumps in 12 colors.
We wore menswear plaid suits, Egyptian cotton tuxedo blouses starched to the nines, and little silk ties made into bows to work.
We wore Ralph Lauren sundresses in madras cotton plaids.
We wore no hats, gloves, slips or hose, if we could get away with it.
