As I see it, you are a Steve Irwin fan...as am I. He was my inspiration. I am going to be a herpetologist just like he was as well as a Wild Life Doucumentain.....
If I were you, I would go with small lizards such as bearded dragons, they are soo cute and easy to take care of! Also, they are pretty laid back, so you can hold them all the time! And, they are sooo much fun!
Thats what I would go with.
Read this to get an idea of what they are all about!

I hope it works out for you!! Good luck!!

I've had about every type of reptile pet that you can imagine and likely several that you can't. : ) Bar none I think the Leopard Gecko is the best beginners lizard that you can get. You should start out with an anole to see if you really like reptiles and if you do and you have good success with the anole then try the Leopard Gecko. They're lots of fun, awake when you get home at night, tame easily, breed easily, minimal housing lighting temperature requirements.

Iguanas are a tone of work and are like handling a ball of nails and razor blades tied up with barbed wire. Then they poo a quart on you.
I love Igs but they are not for everyone.

I also like BlueTongued Skinks which bet big, can be very friendly, and have minimal husbandry requirements.

All of the herps I've mentioned (Except the Anole) will live from 10 - 20 years if properly cared for.

Start with simple anoles. It you fail to provide them care, your investment is not as great.
When you are comfortable and have studied leopard geckos, get one. Consider all teh expenses involved before you select a bearded dragon.
The bottomline is, if you can't afford the animal you want, you probably can't afford its needs.
