I'm no psychiatrist, but I do have many family members who do the same thing. When they were asked about it, they said that they get a thrill from knowing something that you don't, and another from totally ruining it for you. I think it comes from wanting to be in control of someone else's feelings of suspense, since there is always that factor in any book or movie. You want to know how it ends, just not at this time. They let you know how it ends either because they want to be a complete jerk, or they just can't keep their mouths shut. Like I said, I'm no psychiatrist, but that is my best guess.

That is a very interesting question and I have enjoyed the answers given so far. Sometimes I get excited and enjoy talking about a book or movie but I am very careful not to give away the ending, and usually I will even give bad clues just so no one figures it out (lol). My husband used to read HP books but gave up on book 5, and he wanted to know what happened in the last book. I told him the basics but left certain details out so that when and if he does read it, it won't be spoiled completely. But that's just how I am--I like people to be able to discuss things with me so I'd prefer they come into it with a blank mind and make up their own conclusions.

I usually don't, but it was fun this one time. My Literature class was reading a piece by Virginia Wolfe call "The Mark on the Wall" in which the protagonist is sitting in a chair wondering (for like 7 pages) what is the mark on the wall. Well, I finished it and when I got to school two of my classmates were reading it, and so I walked up to them, said, "It's a snail." and walked away. It was freeking hilarious!

I've done it by accident when I've just been really excited or when I've thought the other person knew the ending. I felt bad about that.

Because they are mean spirited sadistic people who are too effing lazy to read the books themselves and just want to hurt others. Now they are starting the same crap with the new Eclipse book. Don't let them!! Don't post any spoilers for it. Let them read it themselves and not ruin it for others. Pax - C

Because of morbid curiosity.

That's about as blunt as the answer can get.

Well, why don't you ask yourself :" I know there might be spoilers here, so why should i read this?" Maybe you should take this into consideration before asking a question like this.

they like to be illiterate and they just enjoy losing interest in reading because there are a lot more important things than readings such as myspace and paris hilton.
