What is the word for a class that you take, not for credit?

I am looking for a word. It isn't "undergraduate", "graduate" or "research student". It is something else. I think it means to go to school without getting credit. If anyone knows what the word is, please let me know. Thank you so much.

You can audit a class. Which means that you can go to the class, but will not get any credit for it. Hope this helps.

It's callled "auditing" a class.
