You know I have been driving for for about 15 years now, and getting gas for that long to. Most gas nozels have that liltte safety clip you can set when you put the nozel into you talk. This allows you to walk away and do other things. Well, it's suppose to click off once your tank is full. Today....MINE DIDN'T CLICK OFF!! has this ever happened to you? And how much money were you able to get back, and how much was your tab?
Some guy had to turn mine off...I had 3/4 filled tank as it was and my bill was $40. I got $15 back and a free car wash...now I smell like gas too. ugh!

It happened to me once, but I was right there to stop it. Now I keep my hand on the grip and never let it fill by itself. I didn't waste much and didn't ask for a refund.

If you got anything back, be grateful. You, the operator of the pump, are instructed never to leave it unattended.

I was once with a DEQ inspector at a truck stop where a trucker walked inside while fueling his vehicle. We were looking at the property when the dispenser nozzle fell out of the tank and spewed several gallons of diesel fuel all over the parking lot before anybody could get to it.

I shook my head in disbelief as the inspector was getting ready to write up the driver for walking off.

It was especially bad, because the parking lot was gravel, not concrete or asphalt, and some of the diesel was absorbed into the ground. The only good thing for the owner of the property was that we were about to start an excavation project to remove some contaminated soil from the site and we were able to include this area without any difficulty. I am glad that you are safe.

Gasoline will wash off. When you wash your clothes, either let them air out for a day or two, or take them to a commercial Laundromat as you do not want to get gasoline residue in your own washer.

If you notice the signs next to the gas pump they say that you have to stay with the car while filling up for this exact reason.

With that in mind, I wouldn't be so worried about a refund, rather than the gas station owner coming after you to collect damages.

Especially if the haz mat team had to be called to clean up your mess or if he has to contract with a haz mat consultant to do it.
