What are the best color filters to use? Is there any way I can make a homemade filter for temporary use? Thanks for your ideas.

With a digital camera you can do it without a physical filter. You just use any photo editing software and at the color balance you put two of three sliders to zero. This was you will get the individual R-G-B components to three pictures. You can work on them individually and finally add them together as a better picture. I did that with Mars.

I took these pictures of Jupiter with a regular webcam attached to a 6 inch telescope, and no filters.

I have been primarily a planetary observer for most of my life, and I almost never use colour filters to observe the planets. Many beginners buy them either because they're cheap or because they think they'll make it easy to see planetary detail. The best way to see planetary detail is to spend time studying the _unfiltered_ view of the planets, and make drawings of what you see. Making drawings is absolutely the best way of training your eye to see fine detail.

Most serious planetary imaging is done nowadays using webcams and software which allows you to stack multiple images. There are many web sites dealing with this subject.
