gets a job with Affirmative Action they are unqualified?
Are ppl that naive to think that ppl still don't get turned down for jobs based SOLEY on the color of their skin?
You say let's make it a level playing field, but it is not a level playing field. The fact is that if you're black you cannot change the color of your skin. When you walk into a room for a job interview ppl notice the color of your skin. You can be the MOST qualified person for the job & that wouldn't mean a thing to some ppl b/c the person hiring can't get past the color of your skin.
Even if we abolished AA, it would still not be a level playing field. I'm not saying every co. is racist, but you have to admit that some ppl in charge of hiring will more than likely choose a white candidate over the black one even though they have are equally qualified. Why? B/c like so many responses on here, ppl automatically assume black ppl aren't as smart.

LadySable-it levels the field b/c there really wouldn't be a field at some jobs.
You can't compete if they won't even let you in the game.

Yes, almost everyday at my job, they debate behind the director's back...He got his job because of Affirmative action...the man is a highly respected surgeon with a PhD...but they still gossip out of jealousy...And they probably think I'm manager because I'm Black too or that we have something going on...Most people can't own up to the fact that sometimes when someone wins or is chosen over you...It's because they were better and have something that you lack.

Yes-and when you walk into a room and you're overweight or you dont speak the language well or if you have an attitude. There are lots of reasons people get turned down for a job.
We see a lot of one color being hired because there's a quota or they feel intimidated by the applicant. I dont know how many times I've heard-"We cant fire that person or we'll get sued". Is that any way to level the playing field?

Not everyone feels this way.
However, how does Affirmative Action qualify in making employment opportunities level? If requirements are set that mandate a company must hire a black over a white, this doesn't level the field, this creates division.
Race problems would decrease if preference wasn't given based on race. This holds true for employment as well as life.

I agree with you. I feel that if you are of black race you have to step your game up. Thats not how I feel personaly, but I know for a fact thats how other people feel. Ever since my firat job in high school I have had about six jobs. ALL of them have made raciel comments and I believe not hired someone because of their race. I worked at a Nursing Home and there was a Admissions Director position open and the director hired someone less qualified for the job. I heard it was becasue he just couldnt bring himself to hire a black perosn in that much power.
I dont think you sound ignorant nor do I think you sound confusing. I understand your frustration. My husband is Latino and most people assume he wears big cowboy boots and a sombrero and beats me and I slave to him. There are so many ignorannt people out there.

people assume a lot of things but sometimes they assume rightly.people dont like that but it is true.it is also true that some companies keep bad employees on their payroll because they are afraid they will be sued for discrimination,i know cause i have seen it over and over again.is this fair? no but it happens everyday people will use race or sexual orientation as a tool to keep a job or land a job they are not worthy of and good decent hard workers are fired because they are not part of that mind set.welcome to the down fall of business in America today!

This is the part I hate about affirmative action people will tend to put well qualified blacks in the same classifications of of blacks who were hired simply to fill the requirement of a affirmative action program. In other words the highly qualified blacks won't get credit for their personal qualfications.

I don't assume anything about blacks. But what about Latinos? What about Asians? Women? Gays and Lesbians? Transgendered? Atheists? Mormons? Muslims? Scientologists? The obese? Foreigners? What about making sure that black owned business hire a certain number of whites? What about putting more white actors in Spike Lee films?

First of all your question was confusing to read.
There are competent Black people out there and the fact that a company will choose a less qualified white person over a more qualified black person is ridiculous but it still happens.
I know that people do get turned down on jobs because the color of their skin. I would rather not work for a company that rejected me for being Black because that company is stupid...melanin dosent soak into your brain and make you dumb. You are offering that company your skills not your skincolor!
And not everyone assumes that if you're Black you got the job because of Affirmative Action. That is YOUR assumption.
