I'm wondering if I need to go buy the sealer that is sold specifically for gilding or is another type of sealer (that I can be found more easily and is cheaper) ok to use?

You don't *need* to buy the special sealer that's often sold with kids of composition metal leaf.
You could also buy your own "size" or permanent white glue (or even special double-sided sticky tape) to hold the leaf on, and most of those work to seal the leaf on top as well as being adhesive underneath.

Some of the ones sold in the kits *may* not darken the leaf color (at all) like *some* of them can, but probably just a diluted white glue (or better, Plaid's version called Royal Coat), an acrylic sealer, or even an "acrylic medium" will work just as well.
(Be aware that some diluted white glues like ModPodge are more sensitive to humidity so can get a bit cloudy in some humid situations... Royal Coat won't).

I'm not an expert though...
