My friend told me he just filled his gas tank up and his gas was almost gone by the end of the day, he wasn't hardly going anywhere. He drives a Subaru Impreza STI and that car is fast. LOL, I see why he drives it so fast all the time. However, I told him, it's probably because you smash on the gas taking off fast at stoplights and racing. Is this true? Would his gas last longer if he were taking off at a good slow start like everyone else or does that matter? Also I noticed from my experience that some vehicles have a certain liter engine? What's that all about? Mine is 1.7 Liter, Some are 2.5, just different liter amounts? What does that mean?

Yeah, fast takeoffs waste gas.

Yes generally speaking stomping on the gas pedal wastes gas. HOWEVER there is a lot of research going on right now about people that stomp on the gas, which gets them up to a given speed quickly, then they back off and cruise at a lower rpm for a longer time, saving more gas than if you are constantly accelerating for a long period of time. The jury is still out on this, but around town jackrabbit starts waste gas.

The harder the engine has to work, the more gas it's going to use. When you accelerate hard, the engine is working hard, so it burns more gas than a slow, easy acceleration.

As for the different liter amounts on engines, that's the engine displacement. We used to call it cubic inches. For example, a 5.0 liter engine, like you might find in a Camaro, is a 305 cubic inch engine. So, yeah, the more liters, the bigger the engine displacement, and in general, that means more horsepower and torque and usually poorer mpg's.

That is true. Anytime you press the gas hard, you are sending a lot of gas into the engine. Hard to believe that your friend went through a tank of gas in a day, unless he spent 4 or 5 hours just cruising and racing around the city. good luck.

Ok think of traveling a given distance, say one mile.
The amount of fuel your engine uses is controlled by the position of the throttle...ie the harder you press it down the more gas it allows into the engine.

So, if you travel one mile with the throttle 1/4 of the way open, naturally you will use less gas than if it were all the way open.
Not to mention wear on brakes tires and transmission.

Yes, when you 'punch' the gas, you are using a great deal more gas than you need to. If he accelerates more slowly and quits acting like he's praticing for NASCAR, his gas mileage will improve *dramatically*.
Also have him check the air in his tires. Improperly inflated tires cause drag which will also cause lower gas mileage.
I don't know about the liters, tho, sorry! :)

litre is the size of the engine. as to the gas thing , his mileage will go down but it should not be that drastic. i would check for a leak somewhere, or someone may be stealing his gas

Yeah, that's true. Just this morning I only made it to the gas station because I refused to go over 25mph.

yes, if he drove easier he'd get much better mileage.
