I did a lot of acting in high school, now ten years later I still want to do it, but haven't since. I live in San Francisco and am confused looking at all the 'equity' this and 'union' that. What are the best steps for me to start going to classes and auditions and working towards the union?

Honestly I wouldn't go union unless you're in NY. The union contracts for women are few and far between oustide there unless you are just that sought after. Start small, go to community theatres, take some classes through there, get a good voice teacher, take dance classes, and audition, audition, audition. If you don't get a role, volunteer and make yourself known around the theatres. Things are very political and you're likely to get into shows just by them knowing who you are sometimes.

If you still want to know mopre about equity, go to their site:
www.actorsequity.org

For auditions, try www.backstage.com or click on casting call on the equity site. You don't always have to be an equity actor to go to those auditions

good luck!
