You have the tank set up, but you don't have the water set up it sounds like. Before you ever buy one fish, you need to have your water cycled. Failure to cycle your water will result in dead fish more often than not. As far as what type of fish to choose, that is all a personal preference. I love goldfish. My friend Kylie loves bettas. Some people love oscars or other cichlids. It all depends on what research you've chosen to do about the fish and how much you're willing to do. For instance, discus are difficult fish to keep and not for the beginner. Guppies are easy and hardy, but multiply like rabbits and you'd better be prepared for that. Goldfish are really quite difficult and more than most people give them credit. Goldfish, oscars, cichlids and many other fish require a lot of water volume, so if you can't provide that, that's another concern. You didn't say what size your tank was, so that makes suggesting fish a bit more difficult. Take a look at this link to a lot of different types of fish. It will explain the basic requirements and tell you their temperaments and their minimum water requirements, etc. This is a decent starting place to decide which fish work best for you.

There are a lot of species of fish native to the Amazon river in South America, which is where many tropical fish come from. Most amazonian species of fish are good community fish that do well together. I would say if you want beautiful fish get a small school of Neon Tetras, maybe like 6 or 7 or even 8 of them. You can also get a few Glowlight Tetras (if you don't know what these are just google the names) And another fish that will get along is the Corydora Catfish. Get like 4 or more if you want them to be happier =) And you can also throw in a few guppies, those do well with the tetras and corydoras, and you could try a plecostomus catfish (aka algae eater or sucker fish) to keep your aquarium clean. And you can put some Dwarf Cichlids in there. There are many species of dwarf cichlids, such as Golden Dwarf Cichlids and Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlids. You can also try fish called Hatched Fish, there are 2 species of freshwater hatchetfish, the Marble Hatchetfish, and the Silver Hatchetfish. They can leap out of the water with their long fins, so if you decied to get some then make sure you have a cover for your tank. I hope this helps, and good luck with the aquarium =)

Some good tropical and freshwater fish are:
Gouramis, Otocinculas, Rainbow fish, Angel fish, Tetras, Tiger barbs, Fancy guppies, Mollies, Danios, Corydoras catfish, Gold barb, Platy, Plecostomus, Some goldfish, 1 male betta or 1 female betta, and Chichlids.
Most of these fish get along togethar but some, like chichlids and bettas, can be very aggressive. I would recommend Guppies, Mollies, Tetras, and Corydoras catfish in your tank becuase the variaty of colors is beautiful and the fish get along great!

youwill need to tell people the tanksize.
alot of factors affect the success of the tank, but common fishes that work well are the same.
small livebearers(guppies and platies)
small catfish ( panda etc... cory catfish)
Small algae eatters ( dwarf oto catfish)
small top fish ( hatchet fish, white clouds)
Those are the beginner fish, as without knowing the tanksize i cant recomend anything bigger,
