Conservatives...do YOU consider libs as "Progressives"??..if not, what?

Liberals like to think of themselves as "progressives," which is not only a euphemism to avoid the stigma attached to "liberal," but is intended to convey that they are a step ahead of conservatives -- socially, culturally, morally and, not least, intellectually. But have you ever noticed at a presidential debate, like the one last Monday, the types of questions these "progressives" in the audience ask of Democratic candidates, or the types of predictable, vacuous answers they applaud?

"Progressive" and "liberal" sounds much better then "godless pervert" "morally bankrupt" "spineless" "weak on national defense" "gay agenda supporters" or "abortionists."

The only thing they progress towards is a society with higher taxes, more govt, less religious expression, govt healthcare, and relative morality.

I think progress is a vector, meaning that you must have magnitude AND direction. Movement alone isn't enough, you must be moving in the correct direction. And consequently I don't think "libs" or "cons" are "progressive", based on my own personal views of what this country is all about. I think freedoms, both social and economic, should be maximized. The conservatives would like to see more regulation in the social sector. That is not progressive. The liberals would like to see more regulation in the economic sector. That is not progressive. Pretty much the only parties that I think are truly progressive are the Libertarians, and to some extent the Constitution party. Unfortunately neither one is really moving at all, in any direction. You can call it whatever you want, but when you're telling me how to live my life and robbing me at gunpoint there's nothing progressive about it. You can say it's traditional values, you can claim we're saving the children, you can invoke the "common good", but at the end of the day you're just gold-plating a turd. Choice and responsibility are progressive, nanny state government in all forms is the exact opposite.

Most of us who are true progressives can't stand Hillary or the rest of the Democrats who are running, with the exception of Kucinich. Hillary isn't a progressive, she's a hawk and she's a corporatist just like the rest of her party elites and just like the GOP. If you really think we have a 2 party system, you are just as vacuous as those you accuse of being so in the audience you described. It's a one party system with 2 wings. They have the same goals and agenda but try to appeal to 2 different kinds of people all the while being supported by the corporate globalists and elites. It would actually be nice to have a true liberal or progressive party participating in the elections for once. I find 'liberal' and 'progressive' to be very positive words and forward thinking in political philosophy. What I find troublesome is that both the Dems and the GOP have moved further to the right and the terrible things that having only one party is doing to the country. Moving farther to the right means that the country moves backwards, not forwards.

OMG, after reading David Limbaugh's opinion piece, I just realized how much you cons love being talked down too. It's just amazing how much he misrepresents progressive thinking and liberal thinking to give an overly simplistic view of progressive political thought to so that you 8th grade graduates can understand and be swayed to their side. WOW, it doesn't take much does it? I mean, you really haven't learned to deconstruct his writing have you? He's siting there writing his piece at an 8th grade level and you guys eat it up. Well, it really does figure you know. The Neo-con agenda has been to dumb down America more and more and it's obvious that they have been doing a good job of it.

Progressives is just another term that has come to mean something very different from its original definition. Teddy Roosevelt's party bears absolutely no resemblance to the "progressives" of today, much like liberals and conservatives of yor are entirely different creatures than today's versions of their namesakes.

People like the editors of the Daily Kos and The Nation call themselves Progressives these days. 100 years ago they were socialists and anarchists.

I do think of a liberal as a progressive or forward thinking. I do think that conservatives are happy to stay where we are or even regress backwards to the days when supposedly all was wonderful - unless you are a minority. I have always thought that Limbaugh's claim to "advanced conservative study" as a curious claim. I guess that you can "advance to the rear" if you see fit to do that.

Liberals think of themselves as progressive because liberals tend to support all of the advances we now take for granted, while conservatives have opposed all of these advances:

Most notably:

Public education

Social Security

Civil rights

Voting rights

Medicare

Medicaid

I particularly enjoyed the youtube debate. My favorite intellectual question was, "Whazup".

It'll be hard for the conservatives to keep up. :)
