I just started it, I finished the first chapter and was almost asleep. He talks about his job at the publishing house, and it was dull, boring, and had none of the goodness everyone keeps telling me about Sophie's Choice. Should I continue? Or not?

There is no doubt this is a challenging read. But stick with it because it is a beautiful book and a very deeply moving story. He is not the first author to use the technique of beginning with the narrator discussing his job and how he comes to know the story. Nathaniel Hawthorne used the same technique in The Scarlet Letter. He brilliantly connected his personal job at The Customs House with finding a journal in the attic while cleaning and then relays the story of Hester Prynne as he read it in the diary. Yes you should continue. And when you are done, watch the movie. It was very good, but read first. Pax - C

It is a terrific book and very much worth reading. It does get more intense after the first chapter, but it never becomes any sort of thriller with cliffhangers in each chapter.

Yes it is, and I agree that it starts slow. It's William Styron's best and most controversial book
