Too many people believe that if a film is based on true events, then the events depicted in the film are, by extension, the truth. A prime example of this is Oliver Stone's JFK. A good enough film, but a lousy history lesson. Sadly, in today's day and age people prefer to get information shoveled into their heads rather than actually taking the effort to find out what is true.
On the other hand, it isn't Hollywood's job to tell us the truth. Hollywood's job is to entertain us. If we go and assume what they tell us is true, that's our own fault.

No, Jeff, most of us read our history from reliable sources.
But why continue the lame stereotype about Hollywood?
The age old question: does life reflect art or does art reflect life?
Answer: Who cares as long as the end result is green? Hollywood, like any other industry is a business. If you have the product and there is a demand for it, then start stock piling those deposit slips.
You want a "free market," well, there ya go.
As Bill Engvall would say,"Here's your sign!"
Hollywood gives the people what they want for entertainment, and based on the sales figures, I'd say they've got our tastes pretty well figured out.

You would think so, wouldn't you?
Many of us do not. Many of us actually read. Some of us comprehend what we read. Some more even still absorb that knowledge and apply it to our future learning.
Still, though, I meet an awful lot of historically ignorant people ALL over the planet, not just here. Anyone who believes the Holocaust didn't happen is not only nuts, but very ignorant of history. We have a lot of those everywhere, not just the US.

Considering how up in arms some people were about 300, I'd say that's a common assumption...
In reality, Americans are not too into history, and probably don't even think about whether a flick is historical or fictional.

I get my history from books which are probably as biased as hollywood (history is written by the winner after all) and entertainment from hollywood. Anyone who believes what they see in a movie is history needs help.

I would hope not,but it wouldn't surprise me if some do. Most Americans know little facts about their history, for whatever reasons. I watched "Breach" last night, while i know it is based on fact, that doesn't make it historically accurate.
added. someone mentioned "300",if i was Persian i would be upset if people believed half that movie was a true depiction

The Ice Age was just like the movie. It was the ice melting that caused the animals to lose the ability to speak and make jokes relevant to today's society.

I hope not. I have seen more errors in historical movies as well as religious movies based on religious text. these are meant to entertain not inform.

Unfortunately many do, not to mention going to the movies now is the same thing as giving to the DNC. If any industry needs a windfall tax it is the entertainment industry.
