Remove parenthesis

x² + 3x - 5 + 4x² - 7x - 9

Collect like terms

x² + 4x² + 3x - 7x - 5 - 9

5x² - 4x - 14

combine like terms w/ common exponents together:

(x^2+4x^2) + (3x - 7x) + (-5 - 9) =

5x^2 - 4x - 14
