Bloody well should be. The rest of the world should kneel before us and kiss our feet for the sacrifices we've made to drag those losers out of the primordial goo!!!

For Nayan B, Get out! For Brendan, The UK includes Northern Ireland!

Britain has invented and discovered more than any other country, Television, the Jet Engine, Steam Engine, WWW, Computer, Telephone, Radar, Hovercraft, Trains, Underground Railway, Penecillin,Industrial Revolution, Vaccination,Splitting the Atom, Tst Tube Babies, Vertical Take Off Aircraft, i could go on...Go on the Net, check out just how much britain has contributed, in science, medicine, engineering, transport, technology, medicine, literature, music,Agriculture, art....who has achieved more, the French, Germans, USA, Chinese, Arabs, Japanese, Bengalis, Indians...errm no!

The Empire too had a positive effect, you cannot judge imperialism by todays standards, only an idiot would do that! The past MUST be judged in its own time, otherwise we'd slag off ancient Mesopotamia (my people, the Assyrians), Greece, Egypt, Rome etc wouldnt we!

The empire bought schools, education, industry, civil service, hospitals, electricity, the rule of law, roads and railways etc to its subjects, india wouldnt exist as a single nation without the empire, the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand wouldnt exist, the Arabs would still be ruled by their Turkish masters etc. Not PC, but Sub Saharan africa was a stone age backwater before the europeans colonised it.

Britain took a leading role against Napoleon, the Keiser and Hitler in successive wars, without Britain we'd all be talking French or German today!

Britains culture, way of life and achievements must be a success, look at how many people are queuing to pour in from less successful cultures and countries! AND THEN, often show jealousy, ingratitude and hatred when they get here.

Many leftist, guardian reading britons are also against their own country, they are wrongly guilty about britains past, dislike their own society etc, these people are prevelant in local government, the education system and social services, and will denegrate their own culture and history within these environments...thats why our kids grow up having no knowledge or respect for the achievements of their nation.

It used to be until it became fashionable to denigrate success. There is a too-large group of ultra-liberal, left-wing, pseudo-intellectuals who, although enjoying all the benefits that have sprung from British brains, scientific research, industrial development, international trade, etc. seem to think that the world would be better off if none of that had ever happened.

That would mean living in caves or mud and wattle huts, drinking out the same watersource the others used as a bathroom, scraping a bare living from whatever we could trap, hunt, grow or find, and living in fear of having what little we possessed taken away from us by the guy over the hill who has a bigger club or stone axe.

Unfortunately, these pseudo-intellectuals are the ones teaching their revised version of history - aaaaaaaaaaargh!

I should hope we do get the credit we deserve for raising the world as our child and raising Africans, Native Americans and others as if they were wanted.
But look at what the nation has become, a place of negligence, May Britain be reformed, until then I will remain here in the Dominion of British West FLorida.

The only place a nation gets credits for its contributions is in the history books but it also lists all the negative things as well just look at Roman history for instance people are more impressed by their wars and cruelty in the area than their engineering.

The English, Irish Scottish & Welsh have contributed many discoveries & amazing inventions.Toothpaste & brushing teeth is not one of them . This comes from India.

We must never forget that many of these "British" discoveries were actually RE- Discoveries. Many ideas & inventions occured firstly in China & India & Egypt before Greece .Britian is is an off shoot of the Greco Roman world of which most of Europe is also. Most of the British inventions are the result of scholarly work based on the texts of others . All inventors stand on the shoulders of giants.

Almost all modern inventions of any worth are the result of Nicola Tesla a Sebian Genius. who has been virtually ignored by the Education system. Mainly because his inventions are too powerful & Governments want to keep these inventions for themselves.

It would be about time that Wales was given the credit it's due from the rest of Britain, much less the world! But seriously, (I'm Welsh so I had to add that part in), Britain has made huge contributions to mankind, as well as most other countries in the world. To what contributions specifically were you referring to?

Number one Ireland is not Britain Ireland is Ireland a seperate country, with the exception of the north politically to be all pc. Secondly for the good things england has done it has credit, literature, scientists, engineers, world leaders from britain are highly respected. Also 'the betterment of mankind' what in the world is that supposd to mean?! you do realise that what england done in the past was not the 'betterment' of mankind but for their own selfish desire to become a colonial power to reckon with. Do you really think that every counrty england ever invaded wanted their ways, thoughts, beliefs shoved down their throats, oh and not forgetting the foreign disease's they brought with them.

So for the good and great things england has done like producing shakespeare, newton, darwin etc yes they deserve and do get credit. for invading countries and taking over then leaving them in a state of civil war and corrupt politicians then no, not at all.

The contributions and provocations of the British Empire are well known to historians and social scientists. Both are very substantial. I am proud of the legal, scientific and political advances of Britain, and disturbed by the continuing unrest resultant from Britain's (and others,' of course) creation of unnatural political boundaries in its former colonies.

Newton, Faraday, Dalton, Darwin, Rutherford...all have indisputedly contributed to the betterment of mankind.

Will Britain ever get the credit? Probably not as, like the US and Germany, it is a large country and defined by passed activity (eg. slavery and empire) that is unacceptable by modern standards.

Put simply no, because nobody in the rest of the world doesn't care and/or hates the UK for taking a stand in the world and doing such amazing things and school children in the UK aren't taught what their country has done for the world.
also with the present idiots in power who wants to give the UK credit?
