"Daddy!" Veronica Lodge stomped her foot. "You said I could have this garden party for my graduation, and now Jeeves won't let my friends in! It's not fair! I want to have fun!
You promised!"
"Fun, fun, fun," Mr. Lodge sighed. "Is that all you ever think of?" He looked into his daughter's scowling dark eyes and then signaled to his butler. "Let 'em in, Jeeves."
The servant opened the front door and Archie was the first to cross the treshold, dressed in a garish clown costume and carrying a dozen mylar balloons. Behind him, Betty was garbed as a gypsy fortune teller, complete with crystal ball, while Reggie was garbed as a toreador. Jughead was dressed simply as himself in his crowned hat and usually sloppy clothes, but he was carrying a wooden box carefully.
"Lord," Mr. Lodge thought,"This doesn't look good at all."
He beckoned them to his side. "This is my daughter's garden party, not a costume ball. Why are all of you dressed like this?"
"We're going to a charity benefit," Betty said brightly, her blue eyes almost hidden under the heavy makeup. "It's a circus for the children's hospital. Ronnie asked up to stop by and we did."
Mr. Lodge glanced at Jughead, who was devouring the hors d'oeuvres off of Jeeves' tray like there was no tomorrow.
"And what's in the box?"
"The Cockroach from Hell," Reggie answered, his arm around Veronica's waist. He ignored Archie's glare. "Would you like to see it?"
"No, thank you." Mr. Lodge swatted at the balloons. "I have guests to attend to."
"I want to see it," Veronica said, followed by Betty's bright agreement. Before Mr. Lodge could stop her, she had swept over to Jughead and demanded, "Let me see the bug."
Jughead popped the last six crab cakes in his mouth and then produced the box with a flourish. He opened the lid and the six gathered around in a tight knot. "OMG," Betty murmured, "The Cockroach from Hell is blowdrying his hair."
"Highly unlikely." Mr. Lodge stomped over. "Roaches don't have hair." At the sound of his voice, Archie had turned and as the balloons drifted into his face again, Mr. Lodge batted at them. He knocked the crystal ball from Betty's hands, and it bounced once and then rolled under Jeeves' feet as the man was returning to the kitchen. The butler yelped and attempted to keep his footing, clutching his tray. Mr. Lodge lunged for him, trying to save him from a fall, and the tray came back and hit the millionaire in the head.
He staggered back, knocking down both Betty and Veronica, popping the balloons, and stuck himself on the short sword Reggie had at his side. With a breathless cry, Mr. Lodge lunged forward, and Jeeves moved to catch him. He threw aside the tray in time to catch the older man in his embrace but they overbalanced and fell on top of the girls.
The tray flew into Jughead's arms but in catching it against his chest, he dropped the box. It landed hard on the mosaic floor and broke open. Several roaches immediately ran for cover.
"Oh, Daddy!" Veronica cried from under Jeeve's left leg. "You ruined everything! Now there'll be no bug race at the circus!" She worked her way out and moved her father's arm off of Betty. "Look at the balloons! You broke them all!" She gestured to the crestfallen Archie, standing with his strings lying over his hand. "Does anybody know where the crystal ball went? Did it break? Has anyone seen it?" She started toward the kitchen.
Mr. Lodge become aware of all his party guests standing at the French doors, peering in at him lying in Jeeves' arms. He looked at the toreador and the hapless balloon vendor, then at Betty as she tried to help Jeeves rise to his feet, and then turned his gaze to Jughead, who had luckily found another crab cake from somewhere. "Ronnie," he said. "Instead of looking for it, why don't I just give you the money to buy a new ball, and some balloons, and a- a- well, another bug? How much will you need?" He took out his wallet.
Veronica took the whole thing. "Thanks, Daddy!" She kissed his cheek. "C'mon, gang, let's go! I know the perfect place to shop!"
She pranced out, followed by her group of friends, and the crowd at the doors began to drift off, certain the show was over. Mr. Lodge set his arms on his knees, wondering what had just taken place. "I never should have let that crew in," he mumbled. "They're trouble every time."
Jeeves looked at the roach grooming itself on his large belly. "I would like to make a comment, sir." Mr. Lodge looked at him. "And I say that with all due respect...you moron."
"Yes,I am," Mr Lodge replied. "I never should have turned down the opportunity to be in the Richie Rich comics."
