I think he's a really smart guy, and he has written some great songs, but I wouldn't classify him as a genius by any means. I have a great respect for Elvis but he really writes too many songs. There are a lot of songs and albums that he never should have released - the awful "Almost Blue," and his terrible collaboration with Burt Bacharach, as well as the overprecious "Juliet Letters," and a lot of the terribly overproduced 80s material like "Everyday I Write The Book." When EC is focused and concentrating, and when he's not trying to be someone else (which is his greatest problem) he can be brilliant. When he's trying to be Frank Sinatra or George Jones, or trying to write jazz or (shudder) modern classical music, he goes terribly and unfailingly wrong.

Not quite genius level ( that would liken him to a brain surgeon ) but a brilliant musician up there among the very best.

Anyone with the names "Elvis" & "Costello" is o/k in my opinion. What a combination! a singer and comedian combined.

Yes... Genius, he writes the most amazing lyrics, and I think Blood & Chocolate is the best album ever.
